Faranak Foundation Statement on the Interruption of Newborn Hearing Screening Services in Toronto
Faranak Foundation is concerned about the current interruption of newborn hearing screening services in Toronto due to the ongoing Surrey Place strike involving Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) and hearing screeners.
Early identification of hearing loss is one of the most important factors in supporting a child’s language, communication, social, and educational development. Delays in screening can result in delays in diagnosis, access to intervention, and family support services during a critical period of development.
We are particularly concerned about families who may already face barriers in accessing services, including newcomer families, families whose primary language is not English, and families with limited financial resources. During service disruptions, these families may experience additional challenges navigating the system and obtaining timely support.
Over the past several weeks, many professionals, organizations, and advocates in the hearing and deafness community have been discussing the impact of these service interruptions. We believe this is an important time to work together, raise awareness, share information, and explore solutions that support children and families while a resolution is being sought.
Faranak Foundation encourages community members, professionals, organizations, and families to share their experiences, concerns, and ideas. By working collaboratively, we can help ensure that every child has access to timely hearing screening, early identification, and the supports they need to thrive.
We remain hopeful that a fair and timely resolution can be reached so that these essential services can resume as soon as possible.
Have you been affected?
We invite families, professionals, and organizations to share their experiences, concerns, and recommendations with us. Your voice and experiences are valuable, and sharing them can help us better understand the impact of these service interruptions on children and families.
Together, by listening, learning, and raising awareness, we can support families, strengthen advocacy efforts, and work toward restoring and improving access to timely and essential hearing services for all children.
Your voice matters, and we are here to listen and support.
